1.     Sir Patrick Stewart OBE

celebrity-hair-loss-Patrick_Stewart_Met_Opera_2010_Shankbone

Patrick Stewart was born on 13th July 1940 in Mirfield, South Yorkshire.
At Junior School an English teacher introduced him to Shakespeare and thus began a very famous acting career.

At Senior School he continued to study drama. When he left school aged 15 he took a job as a newspaper reporter and also took part in local theatre. At the same time he trained as a boxer.

At the age of 19 he lost his hair. At the time he found this traumatic and felt he would never be able to get a girlfriend. He used to wear a comb-over until a couple of good friends forced him to cut it off and told him to “be himself” and “stop hiding”.

Eventually he came to terms with the loss and now says that it saves him many hundreds of dollars in haircuts and hair care products.

He quit his job as a reporter when his editor said he was spending too much time in his theatre interests and had to choose between theatre and the paper – clearly theatre won!

For the next year he worked as a furniture salesman and saved money to attend drama school.

He was accepted at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1957 and made his professional debut in 1959 at Lincoln Theatre.

He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and was associated with them for 27 years.

best-shampoo-for-hair-growth-patrick-stewart-as-picard1His most famous role is of Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 – 1994. And after that he starred in several Star Trek Films. During the first series he did not unpack his bags for 6 weeks as he was not sure how long it would run for!

During a Parkinson interview he expressed gratitude to Gene Rodenberry who, when asked by a reporter “Surely in the 24th Century they would have cured baldness?” responded bitingly, “In the 24th century they will not care!”

He has had many other roles on stage and screen. Most notably, the X-Men film series which also led to him doing the voice over of the character Charles Xavier in 4 video games of X-men.

He has written and performed several one-man shows on the stage, voiced over many cartoons and made various commercials using his very distinctive voice to good effect.

In 2010 he was knighted for his accomplishments.

Despite his initial fears about not being able to attract a girlfriend, he has been married three times, has two children and is generally regarded as a sex symbol. Despite the Guardian erroneously “outing” him as gay, he is not although he has many friends who are!

He has a keen sense of humour and recently joined in the series of twitter posts ridiculing David Cameron’s picture of himself on the phone to Barack Obama by posting a picture of himself using a carton of wet wipes as a phone with the caption, “I’m now patched in as well, sorry for the delay”

One reviewer comments “For years Patrick Stewart has done a one person stage version of “Christmas Carol” playing all the parts. Twice he has taken it to New York where he received rave reviews.  Because of his years of doing the stage version Mr. Stewart fits so easily into the role that he is not playing a part, he IS Scrooge.”

Not to be missed by any serious Patrick Stewart fan.

2.     Bruce Willis

celebrity-hair-loss-Bruce_WillisBruce Willis was born on March 19th 1955 in West Germany. At High School he had problems with a stutter but found that he could overcome this on the stage .

After school he took a job as a security guard and then as a private investigator before returning to acting and enrolling in the drama program at Montclair State University.

Following many auditions he was eventually given the role of private eye David Addison in the hit romantic comedy television series Moonlighting  (1985). His established him as a hot new talent  and was followed in 1988 by the role of NYC detective John McClane in the huge hit Die Hard. The Die Hard films took Bruce Willis to the top echelons of Hollywood action stars.

He provided the voice of Mikey the baby in Look Who’s Talking and Look Who’s Talking Too. Then came a series of films: some successful, some resounding flops at the box office.

He returned to glory with Sin City and the voice-over of RJ the scheming racoon in Over the Hedge and , of course, Live Free or Die Hard (2007)

Since then he has starred in Cop Out, and The Expendables which featured  a scene featuring himself alongside Sylvester Stalone and Arnold Schwarzennegger – a long awaited partnership. More films followed including The Expendables 2 and  a reprise of  John McClane in A Good Day to Die  Hard

celebrity-hair-loss-BruceWillisLFDHpremiere07In an interview, Willis said, “I have a warm spot in my heart for Die Hard….. it’s just the sheer novelty of being able to play the same character over 25 years and still be asked back is fun. It’s much more challenging to have to do a film again and try to compete with myself, which is what I do in Die Hard. I try to improve my work every time.”

We first saw Willis’ hair start to thin when he graced our screens in the Moonlighting TV series as detective David Addison. He was 30 at the time and has at various times made the following statements about his hair:

“Hair loss is God’s way of telling me I’m human,”

“I’ve seen all those little digs where they try to make you feel less of a man because you’re losing your hair. I’m a man and I will kick anyone’s butt who tries to tell me I’m not a man because my hair is thinning, and I like fooling around with looking different ways. I wear makeup in films. I wear hairpieces in films. I don’t wear either in real life. End of subject”

celebrity-hair-loss-Bruce-Willis-with-daughtersWillis was married to Demi Moore for 11 years and together they had three daughters, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah. Following the break up of their marriage he said:

“Demi and I actually get a lot of compliments on how we have handled the divorce and the raising of our daughters. An actor friend of mine who stayed at the same resort all of us were at over the Christmas holidays took it one step farther. He saw me, Demi, Ashton and the girls eating dinner. He called it evolution. That was a great compliment. I’ll take the credit for living in a way that’s best for my children.”

He also says ” I’m prouder of being a dad than of any film I’ve ever done.”

3.     Andre Agassi

celebrity-hair-loss-andre-agassiAndre Agassi was born on 29 April 1970 in Las Vegas. He began to play tennis as a toddler, taught by his father, a former Olympic boxer, who later became his coach. In his mid-teens, Agassi left full time education to train full time, moving to Florida to join the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. He was only supposed to stay for 3 months as that was all his father could afford. But after thirty minutes of watching Agassi play, Bollettieri called his father and said: “Take your check back. He’s here for free,” claiming that Agassi had more natural talent than anyone else he had seen. Agassi became one of the top junior players winning several US Tennis Association national titles. At the age of 16 he became a professional tennis player.

By the end of 1986, his first year as a professional, Agassi was ranked world no. 91. He won his first top-level singles title in 1987 at the American Open and ended the year ranked world no. 25.  During 1988 he set the open-era record for most consecutive victories by a male teenager, a record that stood for 17 years until Rafael Nadal broke it in 2005. His year-end ranking was world no. 3, behind second-ranked Ivan Lendl and top-ranked Mats Wilander.

Agassi was known for his extremely flamboyant clothing so when he decided to play at Wimbledon in 1991 this led to weeks of speculation in the media about the clothes he would wear. He eventually emerged for the first round in a completely white outfit. He reached the quarterfinals on that occasion, losing in five sets to David Wheaton.

celebrity-hair-loss-andre-agassi-7In 1992, Agassi won at Wimbledon, his first Grand Slam title. He defeated Goran Ivanišević in a five-set final. Along the way, Agassi overcame two former Wimbledon champions: Boris Becker and John McEnroe.

Agassi won several more Grand Slam victories in the early 1990s and the U.S. Open in 1994 followed by the Australian Open in 1995. Agassi won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia.

After a low period professionally, Agassi launched an impressive comeback in 1999. He won two Grand Slam titles that year—the French Open and the U.S. Open.

He then took the top spot at the Australian Open in 2000, 2001, and 2003.

By 2006, Agassi’s was having back problems due to a spinal abnormality he had been born with.

On September 4, 2006, he lost his last professional match to Benjamin Becker and retired.

He married the actress Brooke Shields in 1997 and they were divorced two years later.

celebrity-hair-loss-agassi-childrenHe married fellow tennis star Steffi Graff in 2001 and they have two children together; Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle. Agassi is devoted to his family.

Agassi created the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation in 1994, which provides at-risk children in southern Nevada with educational opportunities and recreational activities and Clark County’s only residential facility for abused and neglected children, Child Haven.  The foundation raised the money needed to start the Andre Agassi College Preparatory School, which opened its doors in West Las Vegas in 2001.

Of his hair loss, Agassi says:

“I didn’t expect my hair to fall out. I first noticed it when I was about 19. It was hard; I felt my hair was such a big part of me – it was what everyone associated me with, and I didn’t know how the public would react. So I hid from it. I wore headbands to cover my receding hairline, hats and then eventually wigs. I felt very fraudulent. I was somebody who talked honestly about searching for yourself and being comfortable in that search, even if it means pain and difficulty, and here I was not talking about something because I was so scared and couldn’t come to terms with it.

It wasn’t until Wimbledon 1994, when I was 24, that I finally decided to go for it and drop the charade.”

celebrity-hair-loss-agassi-3In his autobiography “Open” he admitted that he used to wear a wig, held in place with the famous hair band. On the day of the French Open in 1990 he claims that it caused him such problems that he lost the match.

After that Brooke Shields suggested he ditch the hairpiece.

‘She said I should shave my head,’ he said. ‘It was like suggesting I should have all my teeth out. Nevertheless, I thought for a few days about it, about the agonies it caused me, the hypocrisy and lies.’ Once it was done  ‘A stranger stood before me in the mirror and smiled,’ he said.

4.     Esteban Cambiasso

celebrity-hair-loss-Esteban_Cambiasso

Esteban Cambiasso was born on 18 August 1980 in Argentina.

He first played professional football with Argentinos Juniors in 1995. He and his brother Nicholas moved to Real Madrid in 1996 and then he moved back to Argentina in 1998. He played first for Independiente for three years then moved to River Plate.

In 2002 he returned to Real Madrid and when, in 2004, his contract expired he moved again – this time to Internazionale.

As an international player, Bambiasso first appeared for Angentina in the youth teams in 1997 where he scored the first goal in the final. He was the youngest player in the team at the time. He went on to captain that team in 1999.

He first played internationally as an adult in 2000, playing again for Argentina. In the 2006 World Cup he scored the second goal in a 6 – 0 victory over Serbia and Montenegro. In the quarter finals  against Germany the match went celebrity-hair-loss-estebanto penalties and Cambiasso  unfortunately had his kick saved – Argenina eventually lost 4 – 2 letting Germany through to the semi-finals. More recently, he played in an international against Spain in 2010, where Argentina won 4 – 1.

It appears he may be on the move again as his contract at the San Siro expires at the end of this season. He has been there for the last decade, making over 400 appearances.  He was hoping to sign an extension to his contract but he earns £3.7 million a year and the new Inter owner, Erick Thohir is said to have decreed that none of their players should earn more than £2.5M . So he will have to take a hefty salary cut or move clubs.

Both Manchester United and Chealsea would be interested in signing him and River Plate president Rodolfo D’Onofrio would welcome the chance to re-sign Esteban Cambiasso, but expects him to move to Major League Soccer. He said : “I would really love to bring him back here, but I can say with certainty that, when Cambiasso leaves Inter, he will continue his career in the United States.”

celebrity-hair-loss-Esteban-Cambiasso-with-hairHe is married with one daughter although he and his wife no longer live together.

Although he is now known for his bald head it appears that he did not take too happily to losing his hair as at one time he sported a not too flattering version of a comb-over. I think we would all agree that he looks far better these days!

5.     Prince William

celebrity-hair-loss-prince-william-2Prince William was born on June 21st 1982 in London. He is the eldest son of Diana, Princess of Wales and Charles, Prince of Wales. His full name is William Arthur Philip Louis Windsor. He is second in line to the throne of England and his official title is “His Royal Highness Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.”

After the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in 1997, the Press agreed that William and his brother Harry would be left substantially alone during their childhood in return for official press photo-shoots from time to time.

After leaving Eton School, William attended St Andrew’s University taking a degree in geography which he received in 2005. This was a change from the art history he had originally begun to study. As well as doing well academically he also excelled in sports at Eton, particularly swimming. With his father and brother, he enjoys outdoor sports including riding, skiing, shooting and fishing.

After leaving university, William joined the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst becoming a Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry in 2006. He then trained as a search and rescue pilot in the Royal Air Force, a position he has recently left in order to concentrate on his royal duties.

celebrity-hair-loss-prince-william-weddingAlongside his royal duties, William plans to devote much of his energy to wildlife conservation. He explained that “The threats to our natural heritage are extensive, but I believe that this collaboration of the best minds in conservation will provide the impetus for a renewed commitment and action to protect endangered species and habitats for future generations.”

While at St Andrews he met Kate Middleton and after a long and public courtship they were married in Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.

The happy couple lived in relative privacy on the Isle of Anglesey while William continued his work as a search and rescue pilot.

On July 22, 2013 Kate gave birth to a baby boy, weighing in at 8 pounds and 6 ounces. He was later named George Alexander Louis, and will be known as “His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.”

celebrity-hair-loss-prince-william-babyPrince William started to lose his hair at about the age of 25. This did not surprise anyone as his father, Prince Charles, has begun to lose his only slightly later, around the age of 30. Both his paternal and maternal grandfathers also suffered from quite early hair loss. Apart from a short time when he sported a beard amid speculation that it was gown in compensation for lack of hair on the top of his head, hair loss has not appeared to matter to Prince William. Although others appear to think he should be treating it – notably Justin Bieber who said,

I mean, there are things to prevent that nowadays, like Propecia. I don’t know why he doesn’t just get those things, those products. You just take Propecia and your hair grows back. Have you not got it over here?”

Prince William has never shown any inclination to do other than accept that that is how his hair is meant to be.

6.     John Travolta

best-shampoo-for-hair-growth-john-travolta-2

John Travolta was born on 15th February 1954 in New York City. His mother was an actress and singer and all of his five siblings have acted so it is no great surprise that he dropped out of school at age 16 to concentrate on acting.

He had a role in the touring version of Grease and some small roles on Broadway. In 1972 he landed a television role in “Emergency” then a small role in “Carrie”.

He then won the role of Vinnie Barbarino in the TV sitcom Welcome Back Kotter (1975 to 1979) which shot him to stardom.

In 1977 he starred in Saturday Night Fever – for which role he took 9 months of disco dancing classes – and then in 1978 he starred in the film of Grease. Both of those gained him international acclaim. Grease is still incredibly popular and celebrity-hair-loss-john-travolta-greasewatched over and over again by many people who were not even born when it was made!

He is quoted as saying: “I don’t think I’m very cool as a person. I’m just better than anyone else at acting cool.”

After a series of films which were not well received Travolta made a come back in 1989 with Look Who’s Talking – his most successful film since Grease and followed this with two sequels – Look Who’s Talking Too (1990) and Look Who’s Talking Now (1993).

celebrity-hair-loss-john-travolta-hairsprayThen in 1994 he starred in Pulp Fiction which was a smash hit and for which he earned his second Academy Award. He then went on to win a Golden Globe for Get Shorty.

In 2007, after a long string of dramatic roles, Travolta returned to his musical roots with the film Hairspray .The film tells the story of a plump young girl who wants to be a performer on a local dance show. Travolta played the girl’s mother, Edna Turnblad. With the help of wigs, make-up, costumes and a fat suit Travolta convincingly transformed himself into a large woman to play the role. He earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

In 1991 John married actress Travolta married actress Kelly Preston.  They have three children: son Jett, born on April 13, 1992, daughter Ella Bleu, born in 2000 and a son named Benjamin, born in 2010. Sadly, Jet died in 2009 following a seizure during a family holiday in the Bahamas.

John commenting on fatherhood said “Having kids is something you can’t always do. Kids are like lightning. You grab that lightning when you can get it.”

celebrity-hair-loss-john-travolta-less-hairAlthough brought up a Catholic, John Travolta became a scientologist in 1975 and he has credited hiscelebrity-hair-loss-john-travolta-strawberry-blonde immediate family and faith in helping him survive the premature death of his son and in moving forward with his film career.

He has also said:

“I have fame on the level of a Marilyn Monroe or an Elvis Presley, but part of the reason I didn’t go the way they did was because of my beliefs. People make judgments about Scientology, but often they don’t know what they’re talking about”.

He is a keen pilot, owning several aircraft and after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, joining other celebrities in helping with the relief efforts, Travolta flew his 707 full of supplies, doctors, and Scientologist Volunteer Ministers into the disaster area.

For some time John Travolta’s hair has given rise to rumour and speculation. On various occasions it has been clear that he has worn a wig or hairpiece. And at the Oscars ceremony in 2014 several people commented that they had been so distracted by his hair that they had missed him confusing Idina Menzel’s name.

A recent picture of him taken  shows what perhaps is John’s natural hairline while only a few weeks previously he was seen sporting a much larger strawberry blonde head of hair.

7.       Sting

celebrity-hair-loss-sting

Sting was born on  2nd October  1951 in Wallsend, near to Newcastle upon Tyne  and grew up with the name  Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner.

Even as a schoolboy he would often sneak into nightclubs to watch acts like Cream and Jimi Hendrix – strong influences in his own music.

After school he worked as a bus conductor, building labourer and a tax official. In 1971 he joined the Northern Counties College of Education. When he qualified as a teacher  in 1974 he then taught for two years.

He played in jazz bands such as the Phoenix Jazzmen, the Newcastle Big Band and Last Exit on evenings and weekends and during college  and then school holidays.

The name Sting was given to him when a fellow musician in the Phoenix Jazzmen thought  that his black and yellow striped sweater made him look like a bee and decided to re-christen him Sting. The name has stuck to such an extent that when an interviewer called him “Gordon” he replied  “My children call me Sting, my mother calls me Sting, who is this Gordon character?”

celebrity-hair-loss-sting-7Sting is primarily a musician and plays guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, piano, harmonica, saxophone and pan-flute. In 1977 Sting teamed up with two friends Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani (soon to be replaced by Andy Summers) to form Police. They played unde the guise of a Punk band but the critics soon saw through this and they moved to America to make their name playing reggae-tinged rock and minimalist pop. Between 1978 and 1983 they had 5 chart topping albumns and won six Grammy Awards and two Brits.ey played under the guise of a Punk band but the critics soon saw through this

From 1983 they all played solo although in 2007 they did reform to perform a world tour. Sting has performed in the Amnesty International benefit “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball” and on the iconic Band Aid recording.

From then until the present day he has had a huge string of hit records and live performances and in February 2014 toured with Paul Simon.

He has also taken parts in many film and television productions.

Sting is also well known for his work on human rights. He is an active and long-standing supporter of Amnesty International. He has spoken and sung about the plight of the wives, daughters and mothers of those who “disappeared”  because they opposed the Pinochet government in Chile. Bravely he sang  about this in Chile itself, dancing with some of those women in public. He said this was one of the most moving moments of his life.

Along with his wife, Trudie Styler,  and an Indian leader in Brazil he founded the Rainforest Foundation Fund to celebrity-hair-loss-sting-wifehelp save rainforests and protect the rights of those living there.

celebrity-hair-loss-sting-3In 1976 he married actress Frances Tomelty and they had two children before divorcing in 1976. In 1992 he married Trudie Styler and they have four children and are still married.

Sting enjoys chess and supports his home town football team, Newcastle United.

Even in the days when Sting had very much longer hair than now it was clear that it was receding at both sides. There is no indication that he has ever attempted to cover up his hair loss.

In fact, Sting gives every appearance of being a man completely at ease with himself, hair loss included.

The musical is set to debut on Broadway in 2014.

Reviewers liked it and an overwhelming majority rated it 5 out of 5.

Definitely one to add to your collection if you are a Sting fan.

celebrity-hair-loss-sting-field-of-gold*A good overview of Sting’s radio hits and popular album tracks with only one major omission (“Mad About You”), Fields of Gold also offers three previously-unreleased songs. “This Cowboy Song” and “When We Dance” appear on no other album, while “We’ll Be Together” is an alternate version.

Reviewers liked this and the only complaint seems to be the songs which could not be included – with so much music available there will always be some disappointment when favorites are left off. On the whole reviewers concluded that this did represent Sting’s most popular hits.

celebrity-hair-loss-sting-live-in-berlin*This is Sting  touring with a full fifty piece orchestra and performing his best known songs.

For added value the DVD also includes Sting’s spoken introductions to several songs, where he explains the inspiration behind a song or offers some other biographical background.

Reviews included:

If you have the chance to hear Sting’s greatest hits performed with a symphony orchestra, it is one that you don’t want to miss.”

Pairing Sting with the orchestra is brilliant synchronicity on multiple levels. He’s a consummate showman and a willful storyteller.”

Sting proves that he is one of the greatest living musicians.”

8.     Sir Thomas Sean Connery

celebrity-hair-loss-sean-conneryThomas Sean Connery was born on August 25, 1930 in Edinburgh.

He joined the Royal Navy at age 16 but was given a medical discharge due to a stomach ulcer. He took a variety of jobs including milkman, lorry driver, bricklayer, lifeguard, and coffin polisher.

Connery was a keen footballer and   in 1953 was spotted by Matt Busby, manager of Manchester United. He was offered a contract worth £25 a week immediately after the game. Although he was tempted to accept he recalls, “I realised that a top-class footballer could be over the hill by the age of 30, and I was already 23. I decided to become an actor and it turned out to be one of my more intelligent moves.”

Also in 1953 he secured a part in South Pacific and while touring took on ever larger parts in the production. During the rest of the 1950s and very early 1960s he continued to act in various stage, film and television roles.

celebrity-hair-loss-james-bondHis big break came in 1962 when he was cast as James Bond in the first Bond film, Dr No. The author, Ian Fleming, was not sure about Sean Connery for the role saying, “He’s not what I envisioned of James Bond looks” and “I’m looking for Commander Bond and not an overgrown stunt-man,” adding that Connery (muscular, 6′ 2″, and a Scot) was unrefined. He changed his mind after the massive success of Dr No and subsequently wrote a half-Scottish, half-Swiss heritage for Bond in the later novels. Connery had started to lose his hair at age 21 so throughout the Bond films he wore a toupee. This role skyrocketed him to international fame.

He went on to star in another 6 Bond movies before deciding to move on to other things. He then broadened his career with an Agatha Christie whodunit, Murder on the Orient Express (1974), John Huston’s adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s adventure, The Man Who Would Be King (1975), the medieval romance, Robin and Marian (1976), and Peter Hyams’ sci-fi film, Outland (1981). He resurfaced as a much wiser and more mature Bond in the 1983 adventure, Never Say Never Again.

celebrity-hair-loss-sean-connery-and-sonConnery confirmed his retirement from acting in June 2006 and in 2007 he denied rumors that he would appear in the fourth Indiana Jones film, stating that “retirement is just too much damned fun” He did subsequently do some voice acting and had in 2005 done the voice overs for Bond in the video game of From Russia with Love.

Despite his increasing lack of hair his appeal has not diminished. In 1989 at almost 60 years old he was voted “Sexiest Man Alive” by People Magazine. To which his comment was,  “Well there aren’t many sexy dead men, are there.”

Sean Connery was married to actress Diane Cilento from 1962 to 1973 and they have a son, Jason (interestingly, both Sean and Jason Connery have played Robin Hood, Sean in the film Robin and Marian and Jason in the television series Robin Hood).

Connery has long been a member and supporter of the Scottish National Party, campaigning for Scottish independence. This membership caused his nomination for a knighthood to be blocked on two occasions but in 2000 he was finally accorded the honour and became Sir Thomas Sean Connery.

” Following the theft of a valuable piece of artwork, Gin Baker, an insurance agent, convinces her employers to allow her to befriend an aging master thief, in order to better protect their clients.

Action-packed film which keeps the suspense going until the end. It does not rely on violence to make it entertaining.

Great acting from both Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones makes a good movie even better.
celebrity-hair-loss-sean-connery-name-of-the-rose*In 1327, William of Baskerviller, an intellectually nonconformist but respected monk investigates a series of mysterious deaths in an isolated abbey in hopes of resolving matters.

Reviewers liked this commenting on the “very realistic setting“, it being a  “great thriller” and one describes it thus: “The monastic environment where everything takes place is elaborately recreated with means such as the wonderful chorals performed by the actors themselves, medieval-styled clothing (make and fabric), lighting, replicas of medieval books, and so much more. “

A great film to settle down with for a good night in!

9.     Charlie Villaneuva

celebrity-hair-loss-Charlie-VillanuevaCharlie Villaneuva was born on 24th August 1984. He is a Dominican-American holding both Dominican and American citizenship and has represented the Dominican Republic national basketball team in international competitions.

He grew up in New York and attended Newtown High School in Queens, New York.  He then spent three years at Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey.

Villanueva originally agreed to play for the University of Illinois, but after Bill Self left the Illinois for the University of Kansas, Villanueva withdrew his commitment. He considered following Self to the Jayhawks, but instead opted to play for the University of Connecticut.
celebrity-hair-loss-charlie-villanueva-2In 2005 Villanueva joined the Toronto Raptors and played a solid rookie season. In 2006 he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks and in June 2009 signed a five year contract with the Pistons worth $35 million.

Charlie Villanueva’s alopecia began when he was just ten years old, when his hair started falling out in clumps. By the age of twelve he was bald. Speaking about his childhood he said, “It was hard because kids, they don’t understand what you’re going through. They would make fun of me, so I would get frustrated, but didn’t want to show it.”  During middle school, Villanueva says he got in trouble for wearing a cap in class. He wore it so kids wouldn’t ask questions, and he wouldn’t have to be the subject of his classmates’ teasing. But hats weren’t allowed, and he was called into the principal’s office several times until his mom intervened. Still, the questions and comments came, which Villanueva endured in an angry silence.

Rather than hide his baldness, he has made it an integral part of his identity and today he is regarded as an inspiration for young sufferers of Alopecia, and is now the national spokesman for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF). Using his position as a famous basketball player he has sought to publicise understanding of alopecia, and to help children suffering from the condition. “I want these kids to know that just because you have alopecia, alopecia doesn’t have you,” says Villanueva, “I never had anyone to look up to, so I’m trying to give these kids hope. If I can play in front of thousands of people with this disease, it shows kids that you don’t have to hide.”

Since 2005,  Charlie Villanueva, has been participating in Meet & Greets with the NAAF community members at various arenas around the country before his games and they always feature conversations, pictures, hugs, and autographs.  The success of the program was the primary reason for Charlie winning the NBA’s Community Assist Award in February of 2006.

10.     William Shatner – and Star Trek’s Greatest Mystery

celebrity-hair-loss-william-shatner-3William Shatner was born on 22nd March 1931 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

His grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Austria, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine and, once in Canada, the family name was Anglicized from Schattner to Shatner. After school, William Shatner studied economics at McGill University in Montreal, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

He trained as a Shakespearean actor and appeared in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, from 1954.   His first feature role came in the 1958 MGM film The Brothers Karamazov with Yul Brynner, in which he starred as the youngest of the Karamazov brothers, Alexei.

celebrity-hair-loss-William-Shatner-captain-kirkShatner was first cast as Captain James T. Kirk for the second pilot of Star Trek, titled “Where No Man Has Gone Before”.  He was then given the role of Kirk for the Star Trek series and held it from 1966 to 1969. It was only modestly popular and was cancelled after three seasons. In his role as Kirk, Shatner famously kissed actress Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) in the November 22, 1968, Star Trek episode, “Plato’s Stepchildren.” The episode is popularly cited as the first example of an interracial kiss between a white man and a black woman on scripted television in the United States.

Although Star Trek had been cancelled the re-runs attracted a cult following and Captain Kirk became idolised by the fans known as Trekkies. Following the Star Wars success it was decided to resurrect Star Trek as a series of films rather than television shows. Shatner again starred as James T Kirk in the seven  films made.

He tried to shed the Captain Kirk image in various films, especially comedies such as Airplane11: The Sequel and then went on to star on television again as police officer T J Hooker from 1982 to 1986. He has also directed film and television.

celebrity-hair-loss-william-shatner-where-no-man-has-gone-beforeOn the final day that Space Shuttle Discovery was docked to the International Space Station, their wake up call was set to the theme music from Star Trek and featured William Shatner speaking words based on the opening to every Star Trek episode.  “Space, the final frontier. These have been the voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Her 30 year mission: To seek out new science. To build new outposts. To bring nations together on the final frontier. To boldly go, and do, what no spacecraft has done before.”

William Shatner has been married four times and has three daughters and one son.

Almost fifty years since the original filming of Star Trek the great mystery is still not solved – is William Shatner’s hair real? Accounts notoriously contradict each other.  Some co-stars say he had hair and went bald after the series was filmed; others say Shatner wore a hair weave due to having naturally thin hair that looks bad under stage lights. Star Trek Co-star George Tekei claimed in a radio interview that Shatner was balding since the beginning, but Make-up artist celebrity-hair-loss-shatner-baldFred Phillips describes using a bald cap on Shatner in an episode where Captain Kirk had to age rapidly. There have been many hoaxes involving altered pictures and an e-bay listing purporting to sell his toupee. There has even been a blog dedicated to investigating the mystery.

We will leave William Shatner, himself to have the last word.  At the end of his autobiography “Up Till Now,” Shatner announced in his concluding paragraph that he is “thrilled that there are some things that will forever remain a mystery. For example, do I wear a toupee?”
